Introduction

Mechanical Design Engineering courses at PROCAT can lead to a career in a highly skilled and cutting edge area of engineering.

Apprentices completing the Product Design and Development Technician Apprenticeship can also progress onto a HNC in Mechanical Design with the college.

Course Details

What you will study

Amongst other things, Mechanical Design Engineering students will study: engineering design, CAD techniques, mechanical principles, CAM, naterials engineering and project design. The college is equipt with the latest technology in order to simulate the workplace environment.

The importance of maths and English in daily life is beyond question. Almost every job requires the ability to read, write and use numbers confidently – especially in Construction or Engineering where you will be pricing jobs, measuring and completing tasks to precision.

English and maths qualifications are an essential element of your Study Programme and Apprenticeship training.

Apprentices:

Grade 3 (D) or below you must study Functional Skills
Grade 4 (C) or above do not need Functional Skills

Study Programmes:

Grade 4 (C) or above students must study extended maths and English
Grade 3 (D) students must study GCSE maths and English

Self Study: 

PROCAT guidelines for self-study, meaning extra reading, researching and writing are as follows but of-course this is down to your own work ethic.

For a PASS:

Level 3: 1-2 hours per week studying at home/outside of college
Level 4: 3-4 hours per week studying at home/outside of college
Degree Apprenticeship: 5-6 hours per week studying at home/outside of college

Type of work

A mechanical design engineer uses the newest technology to design and build mechanical devices, equipment, and tools that are used in the manufacturing and production processes of various industries. They also analyze mechanical systems, components, and equipment for signs of structural fatigue, thermal stress, or vibration.

Duration: 36-48 months
Study Format: 1 day per week (day release apprenticeship)

Level 4 HNC - Mechanical Design
Location: PROCAT Basildon Campus
Duration: 24 months
Study Format: 1 day per week (day release apprenticeship) or 2 evenings per week
